Description
In 1999, the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) collaborated with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) to offer a certificate of added qualifications in neurodevelopmental disabilities. From 2001-2007, pediatricians were accepted under the practice pathway or a pathway requiring the satisfactory completion of 24 months of training in neurodevelopmental disabilities. After the 2007 examination, all new applicants must apply through ABPN. Only those re-registrants previously accepted into the examination by the ABP will apply for certification in neurodevelopmental disabilities through the ABP. Study of subjects for this certification include: 1.Neurodevelopmental theory, Neurogenetics, 2.Cognitive disorders (mental retardation), 3.Cognitive disorders (learning disabilities), 4.Communication disorders, e.g., autism, developmental language disorders, 5.Neurobehavioral disorders, e.g., ADD/ADHD, OCD, ODD, CDD, Tourette Syndrome, 6.Motor disabilities, e.g., static and progressive encephalopathies, CP, neuromuscular disorders, minor neuromotor dysfunction, 7.Visual and auditory impairments, neurodevelopmental disorders associated with major medical conditions,e.g., spina bifida, severely and profoundly disabled, low birth weight infants, multiple congenital anomalies, 8.Rehabilitation, e.g., traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, near drowning, 9.Counselling, advocacy, and ethics, including research ethics.
